SSDHH is one of the only schools in Arizona that uses Manipulative Visual Language (MVL) progressive program that  teaches Deaf students the rules of English through visual input.
Manipulative Visual Language (MVL)
At both the Mesa (K-12) and Phoenix (K-5) campus's we keep our classes' small with a 1 to 8 teacher student ratio and have a strong standards-based curriculum that follows the Arizona Department of Education Proficiency Standards and focuses on student promotion and reward after showing competence in their classes. We also offer students optional online classes and free tutoring options.

All faculty members are fluent and teach all classes using both American Sign Language (ASL) and English. Deaf and hard of hearing students are exposed to both languages naturally which helps remove the communication barriers that normally exist in the public school system.  In addition, students learn about the Deaf and hearing culture, which prepares them to be successful in the hearing world.

SSDHH believes that open lines of communication at home is very important for student development and offer FREE on campus and online sign language classes to parents and relatives.  Parents also have access to a Parent Educator who can provide support and answers to parent questions.

Since SSDHH shares both campus' with hearing students, our students have the option of taking one or more classes with their hearing peers. SSDHH also offers sign language classes to the hearing students so they can better communicate with our Deaf or hard of hearing students.
Students love the program and are doing wonderful! They have made tremendous strides since introducing it last year,” shares Katie Kostreva, Deaf Ed Instructor.

ONLINE K-12 LEARNING OPTIONS
SSDHH is part of the Sequoia Public Charter School Family, which gives our students HUGE resources that include virtually unlimited class options through our online learning school called Sequoia Choice Arizona Distance Learning.

When SSDHH students take classes through Sequoia Choice they work at their own pace and can go as fast or slow as they wish.
At SSDHH we don't say "if" you attend college we say "when" and we provide our High School students the means to do it.  When SSDHH students reach High School they have the unique opportunity to attend college for free through SDHH’s dual credit program. Students can enroll in either on campus
or online college courses and earn both college and High School credit at the same time. SDHH pays for students’ college tuition and books as long as they maintain a C average. In some cases your college class may also meet a High School credit requirements giving you double credit!

MVL makes English grammar visual for deaf students so they can see if a sentence's structure is correct or incorrect.

ACHIEVE 3000
Last year SSDHH implemented Achieve 3000, a  web based learning tool that helps students read, write and learn better. Since then, our Elementary, Middle and High School students have had amazing improvement with their reading skill.

The program uses a five-step literacy routine that improves vocabulary, comprehension, and reading fluency, as well as writing skills. During this sequence, students receive nonfiction reading materials and follow-up activities that are precisely matched to their learning abilities. Each one of these five steps is based on best practices that have evolved out of decades of reading research.
